Posing To Flatter: Tips for Photographers and Clients/Models

Whether you're the photographer or the model, you might like these tips for creating awesome portraits! Its all about posing to flatter and add personality...

  1. Straighten your back and lean towards the camera a bit by bending at the hip (not the neck!) - you'll look more engaged and confident, plus it helps get rid of double-chins.
  2. Open and relax your eyes - the goal is to make your eyes as big as possible without looking unnatural, and to avoid squinting.  If you're not sure how, try raising your eyebrows ever so slightly.  If you can't stop squinting cuz light is in your eyes, ask if you can put your head down and until just before the picture is taken. Having open, relaxed eyes helps your eyes sparkle, decreases non-smile related wrinkles, and makes the smile look more natural. Another trick for a natural smile: make the cheesiest, most scary extreme smile you can, then relax into a natural smile. This works great for other facial expressions too.
  3. Line faces up so they are the equal distances from the camera -  otherwise one person's head will appear much larger than the others and unbalance the shot. The effect becomes more pronounced as as the lens comes closer to the subjects.
  4. To look your thinnest, try making angles!  Angle a shoulder or hip toward the camera, and if a body part bends, bend it!  For example, bring one shoulder closer to the camera, then bend your elbows so the arms are off your body to let some background show through.
  5. To look your most confident and strong, square your body to the lens, straighten that back, and plant your feet right under your shoulders.
